For years, I didn’t realise that my emotions—especially sadness—weren’t just confined to the stories my mind were telling me. I thought I understood sadness. I thought I had already processed it. But during my first profound experience with Kundalini Activation, where I felt the energy pouring into me, something changed. I began to see emotions in a completely different light.

As the energy rose up toward my heart, it lingered there—circling for what felt like a long time—before rushing into its centre. I felt a sharp, physical pain, as if something was being cracked open. At the time, I was new to Kundalini Activation and felt nervous about opening up emotionally in a room full of strangers. I was afraid of being vulnerable. But in that moment, there was no ownership behind the tears. They weren’t my tears. And that, strangely, made it easier to surrender. In a way, it was the perfect introduction—because the moment I stopped trying to control the sadness, I realised it was simply energy moving and it wanted to be felt.

As I started to change the way I saw emotions, I began to see just how much I had built parts of my identity around sadness. I called it many names—depression, melancholy, sensitivity—but underneath it all was the same thread of repressed emotion. I had mistaken emotional energy for personality. I thought it was just who I was. But what I thought was a permanent part of me was actually just a pattern—one that had been stored in my body for years, waiting for the right moment to be released.


After my Kundalini awakening, the sadness didn’t vanish—it became more intense. But it felt different. Sometimes it came with stories, memories, or images. Other times it arrived wordlessly, like a wave with no name. And even when the story was there, I didn’t want to hold on to it anymore. I didn’t want to turn it over in my mind, trying to extract meaning. I just wanted to let it pass through me—like a rainstorm in a ghost town, cleansing and quiet, needing no audience.


Once I stopped identifying with the sadness, I could meet it with compassion instead of resistance. I could let it flow without fearing it would swallow me whole. Yes, it helped me move the sadness through without attaching to it—and I began to see that what I’d called depression over the years was really just repressed sadness waiting to be released. But something else happened too. I started to understand what some non-dual teachers meant when they said there is no ‘you’—that when sadness arises, it’s just energy and sensation moving through the body, belonging to no one. Suddenly, I had a felt reference for what they were pointing to. Suddenly it wasn’t just a concept anymore.
